George Tibbits steps from the ferry on a spring day in 1941, and Alice Daggett is there to watch his silent arrival with the other islanders. He is a recluse in his forties and the owner of the island’s twin houses. She is a sixteen year old who spends her days attending the one-room schoolhouse, running the island’s only store, and waiting for her real life to begin. As the isolated island community is drawn into war, Snow Island tells the story of two people who face the consequences of loss and choices made in love.
Snow Island eBook Katherine Towler
Snow Island, a tiny speck off the coast of Rhode Island, turns out to be the central character in this coming-of-age story set in 1941 -- on the eve of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The island is beautifully described in all its moods, most of all in the heat of summer.Alice, the spunky 16-year-old who is the main character, keeps her family afloat by tending a groceries store. Her father drowned in a boat accident; her mom is pretty useless. Through Alice we meet other characters -- Ethan the attractive but shifty lighthouse keeper, Alice's friends and the various summer people that come to the island. There is also the weird character of George -- a kind of semi-autistic man who went off the fight in the First World War and came back to find his two aunts who had raised him dead. He continues to visit the island once a year like clockwork just as the weather clears and summer begins.
Alice makes her mistakes (I won't include spoilers) and fights her way through them. The book is well-written and genial. My one criticism is that it while it eventually deals with very powerful issues of life and death, it fails to convey the intensity and sense of importance that some of them deserve. Tragic and ghastly events are descibed in a ho-hum way that somehow devalues their significance.

Snow Island eBook Katherine Towler Reviews
Somewhat slow moving and a little bit dark... I fell in love with 16 year old Alice as I followed her life on Snow Island. Beautifully written with descriptions that make you feel like you are there. You can picture the landscape of the island and you also can feel the isolation and quiet of life on the island. Then there is the life of George Tibbits, who returns to the island every summer at exactly the same time and in the same way year after year....reliving his return home after the great war. As he tries to make peace with his past, Alice is trying to figure out the present. At the end the reader is left hoping that both Alice and George can find happiness in their futures. This is a story of love and loss, of becoming stagnant or moving on.
loved this novel!
This book transported me to another time and place. An excellent depiction of island life.
This is the third Katherine Towler book I have read. She paints a vivid picture of life on the island and allows the reader to get caught up in the story. Her characters are well developed and you actually feel for them as you read of their lives.
Okay, the book was chosen by a member of my book club. I wasn't impressed and thought it would be just so-so; however, I was pleasantly surprised. I truly enjoyed the book, liked the way the characters developed throughout the book. I would recommend it.
I'd have to go back and look at the book again to remember in what person it was narrated, but I can say it is a thoroughly enjoyable book. It's easy to be involved with the characters and the author is a good writer.
Four stars to the author for a great read right up almost to the end. One star subtracted to give to the heroine of the story to find her way through the rest of her life that we are left wondering about after she abruptly leaves us.
