May 1st the Earth is scorched by a stray asteroid, wiping out almost all life. Almost, but not quite all. Three thousand souls aboard a cruise ship visiting the north pole are spared by a freak of nature.

The ship’s first officer, Jake Noah, was looking forward to getting back to dry land once and for all. But then the world ended, and now he finds himself reluctantly in charge of the last handful of survivors of the human race.

The limited resources on board mean that just staying alive will be a struggle. With the threat of mutiny ever present, can Jake rise to the challenge and lead his crew and their passengers on a quest for safety? Or will he take the easy option and leave anarchy and chaos to prevail?

Noah Ark Survivors Noah Ark Series Book 1 eBook Harry Dayle

The basic premise has lots of potential - a large cruise ship by chance survives a global catastrophe and what follows. The basic premise and a number of aftereffects appear to made up on the fly, but that's not necessarily a fatal problem if the rest of the story and characters are interesting. Unfortunately the book fails. The global event occurs at the beginning of the book. The author then resorts to a religious nut case as the main conflict point for the rest of the book - something far too many such books seem to think is required inclusion. In this case, the nut case is even weirder than most books. Then, the main character is the First Officer, who has to take over as Captain. He's pathetically stupid, naive, inept. There's no possible way he should be Captain. There are at least three other characters written such that they are obviously better suited.

Other reviewers have pointed out other detailed problems with the writing and research gone into the book. At least the author seems to have corrected most of the more egregious formatting and grammer problems.

Noah Ark Survivors Noah Ark Series Book 1 eBook Harry Dayle Reviews

While the basic story line is slightly plausible, the main character, Jake Noah is probably the worst lead ever in a series. In the first book alone, he faints twice and pees himself once. He is so anti gun that he almost starts crying every time he sees one. He seems to have the common sense of a gnat, and that's not being very fair to gnats in general to say that, yet some how he managed to make first officer on a cruise ship, and after the catastrophe became the captain, which is even scarier. Nobody in their right mind would want to be on anything with him in charge. The writing is good enough to keep things flowing along, even with the glaring improbabilities. I am half way through the second book, and I bought the series, so I am going to try to tough my way through to the end.
Well written, articulate page turner that somehow makes the apocalypse a brisk, fun read! It starts fast, and never lets up, while never being lurid or overwrought. While not approaching the literary quality or style of the best recent post-apocalyptic novels, like End of the World Running ClubThe End of the World Running Club (EOTWRC) or The Dog Stars The Dog Stars, the character development, dialogue, detail, and plot dynamics are far superior to most other current fiction. Also, it is nowhere near as bleak as The Road, or even EOTWRC; there's a somewhat light-hearted, cheerful British feel to the gravest situations. I was delighted to learn, at the end of the novel, that this is the beginning of a series, which I immediately bought as a set Noah's Ark Full Series Box Set.
I would h ave given it 2-1/2 stars if it was an option.

I wasn't expecting the next great novel, but the premise intrigued me; a new take on the disaster genre. The characters were likeable enough but a bit on the shallow side. Being this is the first in a series I would have enjoyed a more in depth introduction to the main characters, a bit more background and maybe a few secrets the author shared with the reader to be developed in future installments.
While some people got all hung up on errors and impossibilities - and yes, there are lots of them - I can't say I know of many light reading novels that don't have similar faux pas. I'll add one to the list.... when ash affects running engines, it's not going to plug the exhaust, it's going to plug the intake. Another that sticks in my mind.... when the woman burns her hand on the emergency boat gear, I had to wonder why the rest of the deck didn't cook her as she stood there.

That said, I found the novel to be an easy read, and went through it quickly. It's an interesting, however unlikely, premise for a survival situation, and for someone who reads for entertainment, I was entertained by the book.
I had some real hope for this book. The story was very good in what was possible from the start but then I was stuck with the physics of an asteroid traveling at thousands of miles per hour and some how getting caught up in earths gravity. It starts orbiting around the planet several times starting from the South Pole region and then working its way toward the North Pole scorching everything off the face of earth just to fly out into space again. What!? Ok.... Maybe, could happen some how. Parts of the story were good and I enjoyed it. But the main character, as the story kept going, should have just died out of sheer stupidity so many times!
The ash/dust from the asteroid also bothered me in the story. It's not explained as to what it is and it's presumed to be all over the planet, but guess what, it's also ALL over the ship too! So explaining why it does something on land and doesn't do it on the ship would really help the storyline. It would also help the story as to how an asteroid could do what the author said it did and still leave the planet okay a few hours after it burns continents and just about all fauna and flora on the planet.
I just keep coming back to the whole "asteroid did this" but "the earths atmosphere is just fine. The sun is shining now and the plants will grow again and give off oxygen once more, (and in a few million years animals will once again crawl out from the oceans. You get the idea, all fauna fried, so it's gotta start all over right!?) all this despite the ash/dust everywhere on land." and the whole "we're going to grow a garden in the ships park to feed 3,000 passengers" is just too far in the "what!?" side of reality. But hey it's sci-fi so it could happen, right!?
A little more thought into the story and characters like depth would have been great. A good example is the house keeping manager. She seems to have been important enough in the story to be part of the plot, but she's not fleshed out. She's mentioned, then forgotten, then mentioned, then forgotten again. On and on! She's supposed to be someone that is cared about by the crew so much that they would give up the ship for her but yet we know nothing about her. All we know and come to believe is that she just stays in one place the whole time and ultimately is unimportant and not mentioned again after she is found. Yes really!
